Douthat saysthat there has been a major realignment in this country, and it favors the Democrats. One of the problems with his analysis is that he still doesn’t seem to grasp that there is a major demographic shift happening in this country. He alludes to it, and says what lots of folks have said: the GOP needs to wake up, and smell the shitstorm brewing. But like many other observers he misses that for the GOP to embrace this changing demography they have to become a very different party then they are today. A Republican party that is able to win nationally in 10 years will not be one that looks very much like the GOP of today.
